How to Shape a Surfboard (Probably)

I made two surfboards at the Cal Poly Surfboard Shaping class, but I don’t really remember how to make them that well. Oh well.

  1. Remove the “crust” from the blank. I think use a planar to take a lot of it off.
  2. Cut to length, just saw off some of the tail, what could go wrong?
  3. Get down to desired thickness with a planar, just go across the whole thing. (make the deck sloped or flat depending on preference)
  4. Make the rocker of the board (the banana curve) by sanding down the outer thirds of the bottom of the board, then repeat with the top.
  5. Finally, trace the outline of the board.
  6. Cut along the outline with a saw.
  7. Mark the edges or rail of the board the way you want it to shape up.
  8. Make a series of 45 degree cuts by sanding into the edges of the rail.
  9. Blend the rails to be smooth.
  10. Add any bottom concaves with sandpaper.
  11. Forget to mark your finboxes.
  12. Send to someone who knows what they are doing for the fiberglass.
  13. Surf!?
